Cast Resin Transformers vs Liquid Filled. Where do you chose one over the other etc.?

Hi, I’m hoping someone can help me! I’m trying to find information on the pros and cons of Cast Resin Transformers vs Liquid Filled. Where do you chose one over the other etc.?

There are many reasons to choose one type of Distribution Transformer over another, here are a few things that might help you to choose:

  • Oil-filled transformers typically have lower losses than dry-type transformers for the same rating, so have lower operating costs.
  • Oil-filled transformers usually need some kind of oil bund in the installation to collect any oil leakages that may occur, however ABB can supply oil-filled transformers with biodegradable fluids so this is not required.
  • Dry-type transformers are usually located indoors, whereas oil-filled transformers can be located indoor or outdoor.
  • Dry-type transformers can have a higher Fire Retardance class.

I hope this helps, but please contact your local ABB Sales Office in case of further questions.
