What is an amorphous core transformer?

Douglas Getson, Global Product Manager

ABB's answer

Ultra-low loss amorphous transformers use transformer cores made of a special type of steel in which atoms are randomly arranged, instead of the crystalline molecular structure found in conventional electrical steel. The advantage is less friction is produced when a magnetic field is applied, so electrical losses in amorphous transformers are significantly lower than in conventional steel core transformers. This saves electricity and makes the process of power generation and distribution more efficient. ABB manufactures both "EcoDry" dry-type and "Green-R" liquid-immersed amorphous distribution transformers.
