How long can a dry-type transformer be kept energized without load and then connected to a load instantly without interruption?

ABB's answer

It is not a problem to keep a dry-type transformer energized for years without load, and then suddenly connect to a high load. Under no-load conditions, only the excitation or magnetization current flows, which is typically about one percent of the rated current. This causes almost no heating in the coils and therefore no thermal aging of the insulation.
