When is voltage regulation in distribution grids needed ?

Joel A. Kern, Global Product Manager

ABB's answer

As it is well-known, larger loads cause substantial voltage drop in low or medium voltage distribution grids, especially in case of longer lines. Similar, in-feed of electricity from distributed power generation units (PV, wind, biomass, small hydro, gas or Diesel generators) cause a rise of the voltage. Allowed voltage bands may easily become exceeded and large voltage variation may occur. With increasing penetration of renewable energies, this problematics severely grows.
