If there is no equipment between the FAES and Maintenance Earthing Switch, what is the purpose of the FAES?

Olav Knudsen , Principal Engineer, Gas-insulated switchgear

ABB's answer

Usually a GIS section (conductor between two disconnectors, conductor between a disconnector and terminal) is equipped with only one type of earthing switch. Maintenance earthing switches are used for the sections between disconnectors, while FAES for parts of the exit connections.
