We want to install a GIS outdoors in a moderately polluted environment. Will an outdoor installation reduce the lifetime of the GIS?

ABB's answer

GIS are generally suitable for outdoor use. However, outdoor GIS usually require some additional protective measures which are supplied by the manufacturer at the time of installation, e.g. protective covers, other sealing systems, suitable secondary cabling. In addition, maintenance requires more effort compared to an indoor GIS (checks for damages and corrosion, replenishment of the protective silicon grease at flanges). If properly maintained, an outdoor GIS can have the same lifetime as an indoor GIS. In corrosive, polluted environments, we recommend to use a shelter or building for the GIS installation as maintenance is simplified. You mentioned “a moderately polluted environment” - ABB sales team can help you to analyze your specific environment and recommend the appropriate measures.
