Are there any other interface equipment needed to connect FOCS to the substation relays?

Nicholas S Powers, Global Product Marketing Manager Instrument Transformers

ABB's answer

Basically any device capable of "understanding" digital IEC 61850-9-2LE sampled values is regarded as compatible with FOCS . The entire FOCS system consists of the sensor mounted on the line, interconnecting fiber leads, and the optoelectronics unit normally placed inside a cubicle or in the control room. The optoelectronic FOCS unit sends out data over optical Ethernet link using IEC 61850-9-2LE process bus standard. This means that the control and protection IEDs solely need to be capable in handling a 9-2LE digital signals. One example of such device is the ABB's Relion 670 series, which can take simultaneously both analog and digital inputs. It should be noted that in the frame of extensive interexchangeability testing it has been proven that there are a number of compatible (ABB and third-party) devices in the market.
