For renewable independent power production sites, should special current transformers be considered to measure the wide load swings?

Nicholas S Powers, Global Product Marketing Manager Instrument Transformers

ABB's answer

A special design high-accuracy, wide-range current transformer is available to measure these currents with extreme precision over the entire expected range of currents. Independent power producers(IPPs) want high accuracy to maximize their return on investment for the generated power which occurs at higher current levels. But electric utilities that manage the transmission grid also want high accuracy at even extremely low current levels to meter accurately the auxiliary power drawn by the IPP from the transmission line when generation power is not produced at the site. To cover these extreme ranges (as wide as 1000:1 swing), specialized design CTs can offer enhanced Class 0.2s or 0.15s with accuracy maintained in some cases, down to 0.5% of nominal current.
