How can we reassure customers with doubts about sound level, sound pressure and sound measurement?

Abhishek Rai, Marketing and Sales Manager

ABB's answer

Transformer noise is measured in the factory using either the sound pressure method or sound intensity method. Both provide accurate information about the true noise level of the transformer if the proper conditions exist and proper corrections are made. IEEE Standard C57.12.90 and IEC Standard 60076-10 determine the conditions and proper corrections for accurate noise level measurement of transformer noise. Here is a recent IEEE Paper, authored by ABB, which presents how transformer noise can be measured even more accurately. The suggestions in this paper are presently being implemented in the new revisions of these two standards. Sound measurements can be made in the field by our Transformer Service organization in some regions.
