How do aluminum windings and cooper windings compare when subject to short circuit forces?

Abhishek Rai, Marketing and Sales Manager

ABB's answer

Aluminum is not as hard as copper, and is comparable to annealed copper conductors only with respect to its mechanical strength. The mechanical hardness of the windings conductor is, for example, responsible for the winding`s ability to withstand radial forces, and is therefore of paramount importance when analyzing radial strength and short circuit forces. ABB has developed specific design rules and is able to handle aluminum conductors in this respect. ABB design transformers with both aluminum and copper windings, we assure that the windings when designed, and manufactured, can withstand the short circuit forces the transformer can see in service.
