I understand ABB has now reached 1200 kV for AC, and 1100 kV for DC, so is there a maximum voltage level that is the limit of what is technically possible?

ABB's answer

ABB has a long history of innovations leading to products and systems that exceed expectations. We will continue to develop innovative solutions to meet the world`s growing need for energy and energy efficiency. The potential for achieving higher voltage levels is there, but in practical terms this currently makes more sense for DC than for AC.
