Why is proper handling of SF6 gas so important for dead tank breakers?

Robert F. Stoner, Marketing Manager High Voltage Service

ABB's answer

SF6 gas is an environmental concern. It is classified as a green house gas (GHG) with impact 20,000 times greater than CO2. Proper handling is vital to avoid leaks into the environment. Many government agencies have imposed limits and reporting guidelines for users of SF6 gas. In addition, improper handling can lead to contaminated gas (particles and/or moisture) which reduces the effectiveness of the gas in the breaker and can lead to possible failures.
