What are the maintenance requirements for surge arresters?

Christer Lannhard, Global Product Marketing Manager Surge Arresters

ABB's answer

A correctly chosen and installed surge arrester is regarded as practically maintenance free during its lifetime.  A correctly chosen arrester in this context means that its electrical and mechanical characteristics are matched to actual service conditions.  Regular visual inspection may be made of the condition of the arresters during each scheduled plant outage.  Metal fasteners should be checked for tightness and re-tightened, as necessary.  Periodical cleaning may be done under extreme pollution conditions.
