What is a surge arrester?

Christer Lannhard, Global Product Marketing Manager Surge Arresters

ABB's answer

A surge arrester is a sacrificial protective device designed to limit overvoltages to an acceptable level without voltage dips or interruption of the system operation. It is the first line of protection against system events of low probability for which the system is not designed. Arresters are used to protect other more expensive apparatus, and may justifiably sacrificially fail in a safe way for overvoltages exceeding their design limits.
