Why is a pressure relief device not necessary for PEXLIM arresters?

Christer Lannhard, Global Product Marketing Manager Surge Arresters

ABB's answer

The PEXLIM surge arrester is designed using a directly moulded silicone housing with the ABB patented belt winding for a safe “pressure relief” capability. The design allows the PEXLIM surge arrester to perform the operating principle of “pressure relief” through the following sequence: 1) The surge arrester has failed short-circuit and gas begins to be expelled through the soft silicone housing. 2) The gas streams trigger an external flashover and the internal arc is commutated safely to the outside.
