How do you calculate moisture content in a transformer?

Andre Steinberg, Marketing and Sales Manager

ABB's answer

Water content in oil is measured in ppm by taking an oil sample, and applying the Karl Fischer method either in a lab or with a suitable portable device on site. The moisture content of the insulation paper of the windings is measured by conducting a DFR test (Dielectric Frequency Response), a result represented as a percentage. There are few curves to help predict moisture content in windings by measuring the moisture content in the oil only.
