Why do transformers generate sound and how is it generated?

Richard Mucha, Global Marketing Manager

ABB's answer

The sound produced by transformers is closely linked to the transformer's functional principle. The magnetic flux inside the core is linked to magnetostriction which causes micro-changes to the core geomery. Magnetic forces onto the winding conductors due to the magnetic stray field are causing micro-changes to the winding geometry. The geometrical micro-changes of core and winding occur alternating with twice the power frequncy and are therefore vibrations which finally are received as transfomer sound.
